Android 14 will add satellite support to Pixel 8

Android 14

To coincide with the release of the Pixel 8, Android 14 will include capability for satellite communications.

Apple may add satellite support to the iPhone 14 to keep users connected, and Google may do the same in 2023.

Hiroshi Lockheimer, senior vice president of Android, said his team is “designed for satellites” and will “enable all of this with Android 14.”

Android 13 was launched, therefore 14 should come next year. If the software supports satellite network connection, it might be included in the Google Pixel 8 in 2023.

Initial Steps

Lockheimer doesn’t go into detail, and this is still early. According to Apple rumours, satellite connections could be employed in locations without cellular coverage.

Android 14 will likely be introduced at Google IO in May. The operating system’s codename has been rumoured, but that’s it.

Work on the Pixel 8’s Tensor 3 chipset has reportedly already begun (the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are anticipated to arrive next month).

Upgraded communications

Satellite connectivity was believed to be coming with the iPhone 13 in 2021, thus this unique mobile technology isn’t new.

Satellite-ready smartphones are becoming more dependable and less expensive, making them more accessible to customers.

Instead of a tower or Wi-Fi network, devices can lock on to a Starlink satellite in space for data.

Next, it will be added to cellphones, but don’t anticipate too much too soon: connectivity will likely be confined to emergency or backup use, so you won’t be able to stream videos in the middle of nowhere.
