A new patent says Google Pixel Fold will differ from Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 in one significant manner.
A newly discovered patent indicates that the Google Pixel fold front-facing camera will not mimic Galaxy Z Fold 4.
According to patent illustrations submitted to WIPO in June 2021, the Pixel Fold will resemble the Galaxy Z Fold 4.
Images show a device with a similar hinge mechanism and a tablet-style display.
The Pixel Fold will store its selfie camera in a thicker-than-usual bezel around the display, unlike Samsung’s approach.
Why thick bezel?
The Galaxy Z Fold’s under-display selfie camera is a cause of contention for some consumers.
Under-display cameras were introduced with last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 3, allowing users to view the 7.6-inch screen unhindered.
Low-resolution selfies require a lot of post-processing to seem decent. That makes the device’s camera bad for video chat.
Given that Google’s phones are recognised for their excellent cameras, it’s no surprise that the search giant would include a classic selfie camera in its own foldable smartphone.
Whether that aesthetic tradeoff is worth it has to be seen, but we expect Google’s selfie functionality to suffer less than Samsung’s when the Google Pixel Fold is introduced. So, we will have to wait and see if any of this pans out.
